Medium Access and Network Protocols for Self-Organizing Gigabit Multihop Systems

Approach:

Goal of the WIGWAM project is the concept of a system for the radio transmission of data with a maximal rate of 1 Gbit/s. The Philips sub project within WIGWAM deals with the development of the medium access control (MAC) and the network layer, where especially the capability of self-organization of the network is to be ensured. Self-organization includes the following topics:

• Multihop MAC protocols
• Dynamic topology management
• Secure autoconfiguration,
• Dynamic selection of frequency band

Besides the issue of self-organization of the network, Philips takes also part in the standardization of WIGWAM at IEEE 802.11 as well as in the development of the basic MAC protocol, where the focus is to be put on the multihop capabilities of this protocol. The technical work packages are carried out by Philips Research Aachen and the chair of Communication Networks at Aachen University.
